Serenity House
Serenity
House is a three-quarter-way house offering a sober, supportive housing option
for men in recovery. Serenity House offers an alternative to old friends and
old places while providing the time and peer support necessary to develop
a new recovery-based behavior pattern. Men who have been in recovery for at
least 30 days, who have been employed for 30 days or have another source of
income, and who are active in a 12-step program are eligible to reside at
Serenity House.
Serenity House is an independent living facility where all residents equally divide the rent and all other living expenses. This house is run democratically with every member of the "family" having an equal vote. Weekly house meetings are held to discuss finances, household tasks and any other problems that exist.
The residents of Serenity House regularly attend 12-step meetings. Residents also participate in counseling and attend the weekly house meetings. Residents also meet weekly with the case manager, who is employed by STEPS. This case manager helps residents in goal setting, budgetary matters, nutrition, recovery and other issues that will enhance their self-sufficiency.
Individuals, groups or civic organizations can have a significant impact on the success of Serenity House. Donations of household items, particularly twin bed frames, good mattresses and dressers, are always needed. Tools, small appliances, linens, cookware and maintenance items are also appreciated.
Referrals of individuals who may qualify as residents of Serenity House are welcome. Volunteers are needed to help secure or transport donations as well as to help with house maintenance and repairs. Community groups can sponsor the house as a way of providing ongoing support.
